The 36TH District Court celebrated its annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on April 25, 2019. This year’s theme was Workforce Development for All which emphasized empowering young people to effect positive change within their communities, schools and homes.
The Court hosted a day full of activities for nearly 40 children, many of which focused on the importance of developing workplace skills. They also participated in courtroom observations, a tour of the Security and Detention areas, job shadowing, lunch and a question and answer session with the Judges, and a mock trial. New for this year and based upon this year’s theme, the children were given the opportunity to interview staff members in an area of interest for them, which proved to be very popular!
Each participant was given breakfast at the start of the day, an official certificate from the Chief Judge and Court Administrator, and a gift bag filled with various goodies. Each child was also provided with a t-shirt to easily identify them throughout the courthouse due to the growth of the program and increased participation.
Chief Judge Nancy M. Blount stated, “It is important for us to recognize this day annually for many reasons. Parents have an opportunity to share what they do every day with their children and children have an opportunity to explore careers in the Criminal Justice field through their interaction with our Judges, Prosecutors, Attorneys, Police Officers and our entire staff.”
“We are delighted with the success of this year’s event. We continue to expand the activities and make Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day even more exciting and engaging for the children every year,” stated Court Administrator Kelli Moore Owen. “We take every opportunity to guide, mentor, and shape our future leaders. We would like to thank Chief Judge Pro Tem Larry D. Williams, Jr., Judges E. Lynise Bryant, Austin William Garrett, Adrienne Hinnant-Johnson, Shannon A. Holmes, Kenyetta Stanford Jones, Kristina L. Robinson, Aliyah Sabree, Michael Wagner, and all of our staff and volunteers for making this a great day for children and their parents.”
